?Q:   Why do we shoe horses?

A:   We shoe horses for traction, weight distribution and uneven wear of the hoof.

?Q:   How often do my horse(s) need trimming and shod?

A:   Your horse(s) should be done about every 4 1/2 to 5 weeks to ensure proper upkeep of the hoof.  Any longer, you run into problems such as loose shoes, cracked hoofs, etc.  Weather can play an important role in the frequency as well depending on the time of the year and where your horse resides.

?Q:   How soon can I have my foal's hoofs trimmed?

A:   When the foal is about 3 1/2 to 4 months old.

?Q:   Is there a difference between a farrier and a blacksmith?

A:  When looking them up in the dictionary, a blacksmith is defined as one who shapes iron with heat.  A farrier, or equine pediatrist, is one who shoes horses.  Now you may find different variations of definitions on the internet that will describe them as one in the same.  Today, a farrier is expected to have great and in-depth knowledge on the anatomy of the horse;  not to make horseshoes from bar stock.

?Q:  My horses pulls his shoes off soon after my farrier puts them on....how can I prevent this?

A:  Shoes comes off for various reasons.  The horse could be overreaching when moving; Hind feet might be breaking over before the front feet are out of the way; my advise would be for you to have your horse evaluated by a qualified farrier to see what is causing this problem.
